A little whale wisdom

Know what you're looking at. Love it even more.

A few things you might notice out on the water.

🌊

The breach

A whale launches part or nearly all of its body above the surface. It's spectacular—and unpredictable.

🐋

The tail

That beautiful fluke can appear before a deep dive. Tail markings can help researchers recognize individual humpbacks.

💨

The blow

Often the first sign of a whale: a visible misty exhale above the water.

🎶

The song

Male humpbacks produce elaborate underwater songs. Some tours carry hydrophones so guests may hear them.

Wildlife behaviors depend on the animals and conditions. Hydrophones are offered only on certain tours.

When to go

Cabo has a whale season. And it's worth planning around.

Whale-watching tours typically operate from roughly December through April, with the busiest humpback period often January through March. Exact operating dates vary.

Early season
December

The migration begins bringing whales into the region. Numbers build as the season develops.

Peak window
January – March

A popular time to look for humpbacks, including dramatic surface behavior and, at times, mothers with calves.

Late season
April

Whales begin moving north again. Sightings become less predictable as the season winds down.

Seasonal guidance is approximate. No tour can guarantee a whale sighting or particular behavior.

Good to know

Before you head out.

Will we definitely see whales?

No wildlife sighting can be guaranteed. Sightings depend on season, sea conditions and the animals themselves. We'll help you choose a suitable time and tour, but the whales set the schedule.

Is a smaller boat or catamaran better?

It depends on your group. Smaller adventure boats can feel more immediate; larger catamarans often offer more room to move around. If anyone is sensitive to motion, tell us before choosing.

Can children join?

Many whale-watching tours welcome families, but minimum ages and safety requirements vary by operator and vessel. We'll confirm the right option for your crew.

What should I bring?

Sun protection, sunglasses, a hat with a secure fit, a light layer, and your camera. Ask about motion-sickness precautions if you tend to feel queasy on boats.

Are food, drinks and transportation included?

Not on every experience. Some packages include refreshments or hotel transportation; others charge extra or use a marina meeting point. We'll show the specific inclusions and mandatory fees before you commit.

What happens if the weather changes?

Sea and weather conditions can change departures. Each operator has its own cancellation and rescheduling policy; we'll confirm the terms of the exact experience you choose.

Can we swim with the whales?

No. These are observation experiences, not whale-swimming activities. Responsible operators follow applicable wildlife-viewing rules and give whales space.
