Some days are about finding
the perfect beach.
Others change you forever.

Near La Paz, you can do either. Or, with the right experience, both. Drift into the turquoise shallows of Balandra, meet the gentle giants of the Sea of Cortez on a guided seasonal excursion, and discover a different side of Baja.

The peaceful side of Baja

Balandra.
Beautiful by nature.

Imagine a protected bay framed by desert mountains, with pale sand and water that shifts through every shade of turquoise. Balandra invites you to slow down, take in the scenery and enjoy a place that feels a world away from the bustle of Cabo.

The wild side of Baja

Meet the gentle giants.

Whale sharks are the world's largest fish—and encountering one in the water can be extraordinary. On authorized seasonal excursions near La Paz, guides help guests observe these remarkable animals responsibly in their natural habitat.

Wildlife encounters, access and in-water activities depend on official authorization, weather, conditions and animal presence. Sightings are never guaranteed.

The WDCF difference

Same destination. Different kind of day.

Whale shark excursions from Los Cabos can be substantial full-day adventures. For example, one operator advertises a 10-hour guided trip, while another lists 12 hours and offers different arrangements for guests who meet in La Paz. Some include hotel transportation, lunch and wetsuits; pickup rules and inclusions differ.

We'll help you compare the total day, your group's swimming comfort, transportation, and what's actually included—not just the headline price. Whale shark tours do not automatically include a stop at Balandra.

Good to know

A little planning.
A much better day.

Balandra is a protected natural area, and whale shark encounters are regulated. The right choice depends on the season, your group and the kind of experience you want.

Can I visit Balandra without swimming with whale sharks?

Absolutely. Beach and sightseeing experiences are available independently of whale shark excursions. The itinerary and access arrangements depend on your chosen tour.

When can I swim with whale sharks?

Whale shark activities are seasonal and may open or close based on official authorization and conditions. We confirm current operating permissions and availability before arranging an excursion.

Do I need to know how to swim?

For in-water whale shark experiences, operators commonly require swimming ability and suitable physical fitness. Age limits and other restrictions differ by provider. Tell us about your group so we can help assess suitable options.

Are whale shark sightings guaranteed?

No. These are wild animals in their natural habitat. Even during an authorized season, sightings and in-water encounters depend on wildlife presence and safe conditions.

How long is the trip from Cabo?

Expect a full-day outing. The road journey to La Paz often takes roughly 2–3 hours each way, depending on pickup location and traffic. Combined tours can run longer.

What's included in the price?

Transportation, food, drinks, guides, wetsuits, equipment, park fees and gratuities vary by operator. We confirm the exact inclusions and any extra charges with your selected experience.

Are these experiences suitable for children?

Minimum ages differ by operator. Two whale shark operators currently advertise an 8-year minimum, but swimming ability, accompanying-adult rules and other restrictions may also apply. We confirm eligibility for your exact trip before booking.

Can we meet the tour in La Paz instead of traveling from Cabo?

Some providers offer a La Paz meeting option with a different price from their Los Cabos hotel-pickup package. Others arrange pickup only from eligible hotels or require a designated meeting point for private-rental guests. We will confirm the correct arrangement for your stay.

What if the weather or wildlife conditions change?

Operators may delay, alter or cancel excursions because of sea conditions, protected-area capacity or official wildlife restrictions. Refund, rescheduling and no-sighting policies depend on the booked operator and must be confirmed before payment.

The WDCF take

We'll help with the details.
